- No one thinks less of you for trying to make a good impression - err on the side of caution and always dress to a high standard. Whilst many firms today are adopting more casual dress codes, don't forget that first impressions count and often casual dress can be misconstrued as a casual approach.
2. BE WELL PREPARED
- Ensure that you have extensively researched the history and current situation of the company you are interviewing with - websites and annual reports are invaluable in this context.
3. KNOW HOW MUCH YOU ARE WORTH
- Compensation is often one of the touchiest subjects in an interview, be clear about the remuneration package you are seeking and genuinely believe you are worth. Ensure you have researched what similar positions pay and what salaries are like in the particular region.
4. BE PROFESSIONAL AND USE APPROPRIATE FORMS OF SPEECH
- This is a formal interview, not a chat with a bunch of mates. Using slang or swearing is a serious turnoff for interviewers.
5. BE ABSOLUTELY TRUTHFUL ABOUT ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR CV
- Don't lie or embellish! You will be found out and you will regret it. Someday when you least expect it, someone will discover that you didn't really increase revenue by 200% in the first six months in your previous role. Similarly be absolutely upfront about why you have moved on from previous organizations.
6. KNOW YOUR CAREER GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS
- Before going in to interview, be very clear in your own mind where you want to be in the next three to five years.
7. DEMONSTRATE YOUR ENTHUSIASM
- Companies have a genuine preference for hiring a motivated, enthusiastic employees eager to achieve. Shortfalls in specific experience or skills can be compensated by the desire and ability to learn new skills.
8. KEEP IT BUSINESS LIKE AND POLITE
- Even if an interviewer starts getting quite casual in approach, don't follow suit. Keep it business like, professional and polite.
9. TALK THROUGH YOUR ATTRIBUTES
- Stress your abilities and the contributions you have made and can make in the future. Describe how your efforts have assisted previous employers.
10. SEEK INFORMATION ON THE NEXT STEPS
- At the conclusion of an interview ask the interviewer what happens next and is there anything else you can do to with regards information required, availability for next interview etc. This shows a professional, enthusiastic approach and is well appreciated.
